”Hit the Road, Jack” – Daniel James
I started this project taking a hip-hop-like approach, initially making use of my Roland SP404 sampler sequencer to pull in samples of songs that had similar chord progressions I could intermingle with the main melody.
What I found was that “Hit the Road, Jack” followed an Andalusian cadence, which is shared by a number of other interesting songs, of which I sampled and used the following, in addition to the original Ray Charles itself:
- “Mad About You” by Hooverphonic
- ”Maneater” by Hall and Oates
- ”Summer in the City” by The Loving Spoonful
- ”Word Up” by Cameo
I spent a bit of time lining up tempos at either normal or half speed, and then corrected some to get the pitches close enough to not be totally dissonant. Basically ending up with “Mad About You” being the main underlying progression at half speed with an interesting overlay of the other samples in normal time.
I then pulled these samples into Logic Pro on my iPad, where I arranged everything and added vocals (while slightly congested), drums, bass, and some filter effects. All in all not a whole lot of manual performance, but an interesting experiment nonetheless.
