Production Notes
“It’s Time” covered by Daniel James
- This time around I was hoping to get my vocal effect chain in better order and not rely so much on post processing. Didn’t quite work out, as I think I need to look at other options (any excuse for more gear, right?). Oh, and I transposed the song a bit lower to fit more comfortably in my natural vocal range.
- Gear used:
- DAW: Ableton + Mac Mini + Tascam 1800
- Vocals: Voices into a pop-filtered Audio-Technica ATM61HE running into a dbx 266xl. Didn’t quite have the effect I wanted. Applied post compression, filtered delay, etc.
- Guitar: Self-customized HH Stratocaster, using the jazz neck pickup mostly, into a Marshall JCM601 (and using it’s direct out into the daw). Pretty much as-is. Used both clean and dirty channels. Really liking this amp.
- Keys: Prophet 08 direct in, a few tracks with different voices. Some effects applied: filtered delay, etc.
- Bass: Warwick, but with single coil Seymour Duncan pickups, direct in. Used a Zoom Bass Multistomp. Pretty much dry.
- Drums: Acoustic-ish style in the daw via midi keyboard. One track for cymbals, another for everything else. Applied post compression and quantization.
- Mastering: Multi-band compressor and limiter.
“Believer” covered by Bryan Finley-James and Khael Kugler
- Recorded as an online collaboration.
- Gear used:
- Recording tool: Acapella app on iPhone.
- Keys: Acoustic piano (Khael)
- Guitar: Acoustic classical guitar (Bryan)
- Drums: Acoustic DDrum kit (Bryan)

This sounds really good Daniel!
