Production Notes

“I Found a Reason” covered by Daniel James

  • Experimenting this time involved improving vocal pre-processing and overall minimalism with post effects in general.
  • Gear used:
    • DAW:  Ableton + Mac Mini + Tascam 1800
    • Vocals:  Voices into a pop-filtered Audio-Technica ATM61HE running into a dbx 266xl with one channel chaining into the other (this was the new trick that seemed to work well).  Applied some light post multiband compression to just the lead vocal to even out the eq.
    • Guitar:  Self-customized telecaster, using the vintage neck pickup mostly, into a Marshall JCM601 (and using it’s direct out into the daw).  Pretty much as-is.  Used both clean and dirty channels.  This amp is super awesome for recording.
    • Keys:  Prophet 08 direct in for one track.  Some effects applied:  filtered delay, etc.
    • Bass:  Warwick, but with single coil Seymour Duncan pickups, via my Mesa F-50 on the dirty channel, direct in (it has a speaker bypass).  It’s meant to be a guitar amp, but I’m thinking it makes a pretty good bass amp.
    • Drums:  909 style, fingered in.  Applied light post compression and quantization.
    • Mastering:  Limiter.
