“Under Pressure” covered by Daniel James
- My big experiment this time was (finally) getting some real live drum recording in, which I’m reasonably happy with. I tried yet another tack on capturing vocals, which I don’t think was an improvement upon the last try. And, well, the vocals were a challenging, as, you know, Bowie *and* Freddy Mercury, geez; so, I just let some of it go…
- Gear used:
- DAW: Ableton + Mac Mini + Tascam 1800
- Vocals: Voices into a pop-filtered Audix OM-7 running into a TC Helicon VoiceLive Play GTX set to the highest compression option. Don’t think it worked quite as well as the self-chained dbx compressor trick I tried last time. Applied some light post multiband compression to just the lead vocal to even out the eq, plus filtered delays.
- Guitar: Self-customized telecaster, using the vintage neck pickup mostly, into a Marshall JCM601 (and using it’s direct out into the daw). Pretty much as-is dry. Used both clean and dirty channels. This amp is still super awesome for recording.
- Keys: Prophet 08 direct in for a few tracks. Some effects applied: filtered delay, etc.
- Bass: Warwick, but with single coil Seymour Duncan pickups, via my Mesa F-50 on the dirty channel, direct in. Still think it makes a pretty good bass amp.
- Drums: Cobbled together mostly pawn shop kit. Snare is new Pearl birch, cymbals are new Meinl HCS line (just hi hats and a crash), 22″ PDP kick with new resonant head (hard beater), 10″ PDP tom. Moongel applied. 3-mic method involved a CAD kick mic through the port hole, an SM57 right up to the side of the snare, and a (dynamic) Audio-Technica ATM61HE about 5 ft behind me for ambient (cymbal) pickup.
- Mastering: Limiter.
